This incumbent will act as an System Protection and Control Subject Matter Expert (SME) for the development of protection and control standards and templates for relays, reclosers, switchgear, and other protection and control concepts as a member of the Customer Delivery (CD) System Protection and Control peer team within the CD Operational and Automation Standards team. The position will be focused on development and management of standards for operational technology protective relays, controls, and automation devices. The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
Manage CDOAS Midwest protection and control lab
Development of protection & control standard settings, logic, and control templates
Development of related application guidance documents for standards application
SME input into training and work method related documentation and training artifacts
Hands on testing within relay lab, field lab, factory and field acceptance testing of new and existing concepts, working with switchgear, relays, and control components including voltage and current secondary injection test sets
Integration of various sensing, control, communications, and protection capabilities into technical standard solution systems
Close working cooperation with peer team lead for CD System Protection Team and team members within CD OAS, peers in the Equipment and Construction Standards team, and stakeholders within CD Asset Management
Mentorship and peer leadership with fellow engineers
Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity
Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities
Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team
Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity
Conducts engineering and related studies
Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems
Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies
Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities
Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills including development of training guides and protection standards
Maintains accurate records and files
Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally
Senior Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience
Lead Engineer
Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
Minimum of 8 years of engineering experience

Knowledge and ability to design, create standards, and evaluate system protection and control for medium voltage systems (4kV-36kV class)
Programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer to peer communications
Experience performing system protection and coordination studies
Familiarity/experience with advanced protocols, IEC 61850 GOOSE, DNP3.0, including programming and testing advanced protection and automation systems with peer to peer communications
Familiarity with communication control concepts, such as SCADA
Experience integrating and testing protection and control systems
Familiarity/experience with SEL protection automation controls/relays (SEL-651R, SEL-487, SEL-451, SEL 751) and associated configuration software
Familiarity/experience with OMICRON test equipment and associated Test Universe software
Familiarity with SEL Quickset software suites
Experience developing/programming relay and control design templates, including development of system protection relay settings and logic
Experience creating standards, standard settings templates, and application guides
Experience performing factory acceptance and field acceptance testing of systems
Familiarity with related industry standards, such as ANSI (Associated Electric Systems Interface), IEEEE 519 Harmonics; IEC 61850 Communication networks and systems for power utility automation
Transmission Protection and Control Experience
Distribution Protection Automation Control Experience
Distribution field engineering experience
Experience with Integration of power plant, distributed resources, or major industrial/commercial/government customer load facilities
Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
Experience in the utility industry - industry standards development
Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles
Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations
Good written and oral communication skills

Hybrid Mobility Classification - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable dailycommute to a Duke Energy facility.
